School-Based Services

Ear and Hearing Screening in Schools

HHR began implementing school-based ear and hearing care services in the Gasabo District, targeting public and government-aided schools. The initiative started with comprehensive screenings conducted by a specialized team composed of ENT doctors, audiologists, and trained nurses.

Hearing Tests

Early detection of hearing loss through comprehensive evaluations

Ear Examination

Identification of infections, wax build-up, foreign bodies, and other ear-related issues

Medical Referral

Referral for specialized treatment where necessary

Capacity Building

Training of Nurses in Ear and Hearing Health

A group of nurses from various health facilities recently participated in a comprehensive two-day training program organized by HHR. The purpose was to enhance their knowledge and practical skills in ENT care and equip them to conduct effective ear and hearing screening.

Basic anatomy and physiology of the ear

Common ear diseases and conditions in children

Identification of symptoms requiring urgent referral

Proper use of screening tools and equipment

Hands-on practice in otoscopic examinations

Techniques for carrying out hearing screening

Data recording, reporting, and follow-up procedures

Communication skills for engaging children, teachers, and parents

The goal of this capacity-building initiative is to create a pool of well-trained nursing professionals who can:

Identify ear and hearing difficulties early

Provide first-line management for minor conditions

Refer complex cases to specialized ENT services

Strengthen collaboration between schools and health facilities

Contribute to reducing preventable hearing loss among children

This training significantly boosts Rwanda's local capacity to deliver ongoing ear and hearing services, helping create a sustainable model that will benefit children for years to come.
